£27500

Dated: 1820 to 1830 Staffordshire English

One of the rarest Staffordshire pottery pearlware figure Groups "WOMBWELLS MENARGERIE". All the Menagerie figures are rare and this example is the only one not attributed to Obadiah Sherratt. The figure is formed as a box like structure and is undecorated on the back. The figures are very evocative of the period and have a warming charm with the band playing in the curtained entrance with three lamps and pillars. The top of the group has a figure of an elephant and two monkeys. An important piece of social history it is unlikely that more than 25 examples remain in existence today.

Dimensions: 8.5 inches high

Current Condition: Restored.

Provenance: Jonathan Horne and private English Collection.

Literature: Myrna Schkolne page 12 Volume 3, Staffordshire Figures 1780-1840. This volume also illustrates a similar figure on the dust cover.
