The light grey stoneware salt-glazed costrel is decorated with cobalt blue and manganese under the glaze. It has a turned base, a narrow tapering neck, and four suspension loops applied to the diameter of the body. The front and reverse of the body are applied with oval medallions containing the French Coat of Arms. A profusion of applied fleur-de-lis surrounds the medallions. The form and respectfully applied decoration are exceptional, suggesting it was possibly intended for pilgrims commencing the Santiago de Compostela ,the Way of Saint James from its starting point in Paris. The costrel is in remarkable condition, a testament to its historic significance.
