Description
This significant earthenware documentary costrel is slip decorated with a lead glaze. There are four pierced lugs and a shallow groove running around the rim. The pot is mammiform shaped, a very rare form produced at the Verwood Pottery located in Dorset.
The dome-shaped front is inscribed “Henry Tufton his bottle.”
The flat back of the costrel is inscribed with the name John Andrew Maker and dated 1871.
In the 1871 Census for Cranborne in District 3, Alder Holt records”John Andrews 52 years old ,married, a potter born in Verwood Dorset”.
