A Staffordshire scratch blue saltglaze pottery porter mug or tankard dated 1766. The scratch blue decoration of scrolling branches and flowers frames an inscription "Thos. Elles 1766". This is a rare and wonderful example of the art of the Staffordshire potter in the very early days of commercial production in the England.
