An antique Staffordshire pottery figure of a bull baiting group on a serpentine-shaped table base by Obadiah Sherratt, c1820. This figure is a very rare size, boldly modeled, and enamel-colored. The base is 9 inches long and is an unusual four-footed example. The male figure is holding a club and raising his hat in the air, beckoning punters to lay their wagers. The tethered bull is flipping one terrier up over his back while his partner terrier stands grasping the bull's horn. A lively compelling figure depicting a " sport" which was banned in 1835 in Great Britain.

Dimensions: 8.25 inches high 9.75 inches long

Current Condition: Restored, Hat, arm and legs of male figure, the bulls tail one horn and ear, and two paws and tail of dogs.

Literature: Myrna Schkolne; People, Passions, Pastimes and Pleasures Staffordshire Figures 1810-35. Chapter 13 details the position of bull baiting in English Society and has numerous illustrations of figures related to this "sport" which was outlawed in 1835.Myrna notes that the last recorded Bull Baiting took place in 1853
