Description
A pair of antique Staffordshire pottery figures titled Sheperd and Sheperdess.
(Not my spelling I hasten to add).
This charming pottery pair are nicely colored examples in bright enamels.
These romantic country figures hide the truth that such work in the early nineteenth century was arduous. Interestingly numerous figures are found with quaint spelling errors. It is such anomolies that provide a human touch to these figures which were produced for ordinary working folk. The potters pruducing these figures would no doubt be amamzed today to know that their lack of education was triumphed by their wonderful folk art.
