An antique Staffordshire pottery pine cone bocage group in pearlware and colored glazes and known as PERSUASION produced at the beginning of the 19th century in Staffordshire. A somewhat whimsical dog looks adoringly and coyly at his mistress, almost imploring her to say yes. The figures are very well modeled and colored, always the case with this very appealing example attributed to the "Patriot Group."

Dimensions: 8 inches high 7.5 inches long

Current Condition: Professional restoration at bocage, leaves on the plant, man's ring hand, crack at females head, and enamels re-touched in places.

Provenance: Private Collection Manchester England

Literature: Myrna Schkolne in her book People,Passion,Pastimes and Pleasures Staffordshire figures c1810-35 illustrates a similar figure in Chapter 4 titled "Courtship". You will see by reference to this book that several figures were produced relating to courtship. This was a popular subject in the days when an easy promise could turn to be an expensive excercise..... usually for the man!
