A rare Staffordshire pottery pearlware figure of a bear tethered and baited by a vicious dog .
The subject matter is repugnant but is a reflection of society in the 18th and 19th century It was a popular attraction in Elizabethan times. Many of these figures are very vigorously potted and decorated and are often represent the pinnacle of expertise from the Staffordshire potters.Bear and Bull baiting was formally banned in England 1835.
