This Staffordshire pottery pearlware bocage-type figure group is known as "The Raising of Lazarus." It depicts the sisters Mary and Martha thanking Jesus for raising their beloved Lazarus from his death four days earlier. Lazarus is shown standing against his tomb, wrapped in linen burial bandages. His tombstone reads, " X1 CHAP OF JOHN & 43 VERSE & JESUS CRIED WITH A LOUD VOICE LAZARUS COME FORTH". This rare figure is unusually decorated in green under the base and has expressive sentiment with a touch of warming humanity.

Current Condition: Professionally restored, tombstone re-attached, some bocage leaves and outer hand.

Provenance: Private Collection USA and previously with D.M. & P Manheim, New York. Then Sotheby NY Dec 29, 1987, Lot 407, The Benjamin L. Lake Collection of Staffordshire Figures.
