A good eaxmple of a Staffordshire pottery pearlware figure with enamel colours of Robinson Crusoe. The book titled Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe was published int he early 18th century. Crusoe is modelled with good detail with attention given to his survival tools, a gun,axe, swag bag and powder horn. The story was turned into a play and was performed in English theatres in the late 18th and early 19th century. The enduring story of a castaway marooned on an island for 28 years captures the imagination, it is likely that this figure was produced as a memento of the theatrical production.
