Staffordshire pearlware pottery figure of a tiger mauling a child circa 1820

This exceptionally rare Staffordshire Pottery model of a tiger mauling a child stands on an oval base, which is faux marbled in black. The child is prostrate under the tiger's paw, the animal bearing teeth and staring down with red-rimmed eyes.   The figure is from a group of "menagerie" related models produced by the " Obadiah Sherratt Pottery."

Dimensions: 5.5 inches high 8.25 inches long

Current Condition: Restored at child, tail and re-touched enamels by ceramic conservators to the British Royal Family.

Literature: Myrna Schkolne, People, Passions, Pastimes and Pleasures (2006) page 110 illustrates the same model but with a lamb as the unfortunate subject .
