Saffordshire pottery midshipman Toby Jug circa 1780 England

£15000

Dated: 1770 to 1775 Staffordshire England

An exceptionally rare Staffordshire creamware bodied Toby Jug from the "Midshipman series" often attributed to Astbury and/or Whieldon and now attributed as "type" as no definitive attribution has yet been made. These Toby's were originally thought to commemorate Rodney but this is questionable. The Midshipman/Midshipmite series comprises of a fiddler, a tailor, and a drinker. All examples from this series are exceptionally rare and are probably the first "Toby Jugs" produced in England. This "Drinker" version is in fine original condition with no restorations.

Dimensions: 7 inches high

Current Condition: Unrestored with minor chips

Provenance: Private Collection England
