£1250

Dated: 1700 Germany

Antique Stoneware pottery Bellarmine in saltglaze. This piece is in fine order with a good glaze, it is also an interesting size at just over 13 inches high. The face on the Bellarmine represents Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621) a prominent and distinguished theologion whose adverse comments on drink provoked the response of producing an image of his bearded head on these drinking vessels. Sadly he is more famous for having his name associated with these flagons than his exceptional and learned work on theology.
