Description
Antique 18th century pottery vase and cover decorated with surface agateware.
The vase is modeled standing on white basalt plinth which is impressed WEDGWOOD.
Amphora shaped with an ovoid body and with four striking serpent handles which terminate at their lower attachement in a wonderfully modeled classical baccus mask.
A feature of the handles is the way Wedgwood has designed them to pierce through the top rim of the vase. This adds a unique feature to this very elegant and classical piece.
The
vase is an early example of Wegwood’s work, dating to circa 1770/80 period.
The vase is complete with its original domed cover.
