Dated: 1825 Staffordshire England

One of the most celebrated Staffordshire pearlware figure groups of the early 19th century is Polito's Menagerie. This figure is a highly detailed example and shows monkeys, birds, a lion, an elephant, a tiger, and a male hurdy-gurdy player with a monkey and five female musicians. It is thought that the lady standing by the door is Mrs. Polito, whose job was to take the entrance fees to the spectacular and exotic array of beasts and birds comprising the menagerie. The banner across the top of the figure reads "POLITOS ROYAL MENAGERIE OF THE WONDERFUL BURDS AND BEASTS FROM MOST PARTS OF THE WORLD." This spectacular figure is a table base version attributed to the Obadiah Sherratt Pottery located in Staffordshire.
