A Pair of large-scale pottery slipware whistles formed as a bird (possibly a Cuckoo) perched on a horizontal branch mounted on a conical base in the form of a tree trunk. Four smaller birds are perched among the branches. The decoration is a striated cream and manganese slip. The whistle emanates a pleasing cuckoo call or a realistic soft cooing of a wood pigeon. This striking and rare pair are marked on the front with the initials WB.
Dimensions: 9.25 inches high
Current Condition: Two small birds replaced.
