Description
A very fine and rare true pair of Ralph Wood figures made in the late 18th century.
The Flute player comprises of a male flute player and female figure seated side by side on a rocky mound surrounded by animals. The companion piece shows male and female figures also seated on a rocky mound with a waterfall. The girl is holding a pet bird in her hand whilst the male figure holds a bird cage. Both figures feature bocage trees and are beatifully decorated in colored green, soft brown and blue in classic Ralph Wood fashion. As one would expect the modelling of the pair are expertly produced, they are very crisply modelled and denote an early pair of this type. The Bird-cage figure is impressed under the dry bodied base with the number 89.
A truly spectacular pair of figures from Ralph Wood a master and influential potter of the period .
