Pair of Prattware pottery figures of Cymon and Iphigenia English circa 1790

The Prattware pottery figures represent Cymon and Iphigenia standing on square bases with a surround of relief molded acanthus leaves. Based on Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron, Iphigenia is sleeping in the woods, and Cymon, a young nobleman, stands gazing at her beauty, which inspires him. After seeing her, Cymon changes from a poorly-mannered lout to an ideal man of great knowledge.

Dimensions: 10.5 inches high

Current Condition: Iphigenia is professionally restored . Tip of the tree trunk on the Cymon figure.

Provenance: Retains the label of The Evelyn Bowen Collection

Literature: John and Griselda Lewis, page 266 Prattware and noted that a similar figure of Iphigenia is located in the ceramic collection at Colonial Williamsburg
