These monumental figures of Shakespeare and Milton were made at the Derby Porcelain Works in the early 19th century. Shakespeare is modeled leaning on books with a scroll on a column, and Milton holding a scroll, the bases are well decorated in faux marble. Smaller versions were made of the pair. These large-scale figures are rare and one of the most significant figures made at the Derby Works. The pair is in very fine order.
