A very rare Llanelly Pottery plate with a hand painted standing figure of Mari Jones , bearing the inscription "The Land of the Leek". A wonderfLul primitive plate from this famous South Wales Pottery. The reverse of the plate bears the LLANELY mark. The story of Mary Jones, her Bible and her amazing journey. In 1800 Mary Jones, the 15-year-old daughter of a weaver from Llanfihangel-y-Pennant at the foot of Cader Idris, walked 25 miles, barefoot and across rugged mountain country, simply to buy a Bible from the Reverend Thomas Charles of Bala. The story with it strong Methodist was recounted in schools in the 19th century, today the significance is a largely forgotten aspect of Welsh history. This plate is a lasting testament to the young girl's spirit.

Literature: Llanelly Pottery by Gareth Hughes and Robert Pugh figure 168 shows a similar figure rendition of Mari Jones but with the inscription Wales.
