Description
This London delftware wine bottle is a large form with a rounded body raised on a spreading foot. The applied strap handle has a pointed lower terminal, and the front of the piece is inscribed in blue, “Sack 1650,” with a scrolling flourish under the date. The bottle dates to the Commonwealth Period in British history, just one year after the execution of King Charles 11.
NOTE: Sack is an old wine term referring to a fortified white wine usually imported into Britain from Spain and the Canary Islands.
