Description
This pottery jug has a pearlware glaze and is decorated under the spout with a view of Moscow burning titled “Hourrah Your Serene Highness.” The sides of this dramatic piece are decorated with hand-painted scenes titled”A Russian Boor returning from his field of sport” and “Specimen of Russian Chopping Blocks,” all written in Russian and English.
The jug is a magnificent commemorative of the bloody battle of Borodino, where over 70,000 lives were lost.
The paintings on the jug were inspired by George Crookshanks Cartoons, which alluded to Napoleon’s disastrous campaign against the Russians in 1812.
