Description
The large-scale pottery pipe is an exceptionally rare piece made in the North of England at the beginning of the 19th century.
The pipe bowl is painted with maroon flowers and green leaves; sweeping stripes of maroon and squiggles with yellow dots continue down half the stem. The decoration is completed with cobalt blue.
The pipe has a curling grip on the stem for the thumb and a spike under the bowl to support the forefinger. These large-scale pieces are sometimes associated with tavern culture, where the imposing display provides extra merriment.
