Large impressive Devon Harvest slipware pottery jug sgraffito decorated and signed E. Fishley and dated 1851

This rare slipware harvest jug is one of the earliest examples of Edwins Fishley's work at the Fremington Pottery Devon and is signed and dated in an elaborate cartouche at the base of the handle. The jug is decorated with a profusion of images of rural images and poems. There are images of a stag tethered to a post, a male equestrian, a horse with a male standing figure, a large cow with the owners proudly standing along, and masses of flowers and thistles. The two poems read, "Long may you live, Happy may you be, Blessed with content from misfortunes free" and " Success to the farmer the plough and the file, Likewise to our commerce with peace in our Isles." This significant folk art pitcher is one of the most expressive examples from the pottery and is full of life and vigor with warming sentiments.

Current Condition: The jug is in remarkably good unrestored condition with only minor signs of wear commensurate with age and use.
