Exceptionally rare bocage pearlware figure of a Lion and child “Obadiah Sherratt” Staffordshire circa 1825

This remarkable large-scale bocage figure is perhaps one of the rarest pieces of Staffordshire pearlware pottery from the early 19th century. The magnificent tiger is strikingly decorated and modeled and stands on a green base with flowers. A child is held in the grip of his jaws. Some other rare pieces depict Tigers with sorry victims and are known as "Menagerie Deaths." They represent accidents at events where the large cat has managed to evade his keepers. The figure was previously unrecorded and made at the "Obadiah Sherratt" pottery in Staffordshire, England.
