English pearlware tankard “The World in Planisphere” Staffordshire late 18th century

A rare-sized high-sided pearlware tankard decorated with an underglaze transfer print overpainted with enamels of an archaic double-hemisphere world map, with allegorical figures representing Continents at the margins. A rising sun emerges from clouds on top of the globes. A cartouche at the base states, "THE WORLD IN PLANISPHERE." The polychrome decoration on this finely potted piece is of the highest quality.

Dimensions: 6.25 inches high

Current Condition: A chip at the rim has been professionally restored and is other wise in very good condition.
