Description
An impressive socially historic Nottingham pottery stoneware salt-glazed bear related to the spectator “sport” of bear-baiting and modeled hugging a fighting dog. These pieces served as tobacco jars and ale jugs. The bear’s ferocity is illustrated by adding white slipped teeth and claws. The lustrous glaze and application of fragmented clays are exceptional. The handle has been replaced by an ancient metal “make-do” tinker repair with an applied binding.
Bear baiting was banned in Britain in 1835.
