English brown stoneware bear baiting jug and cover Nottingham mid 18th century

£2450

Dated: 1750 Nottingham England

An impressive socially historic Nottingham pottery stoneware salt-glazed bear related to the spectator "sport" of bear-baiting and modeled hugging a fighting dog. These pieces served as tobacco jars and ale jugs. The bear's ferocity is illustrated by adding white slipped teeth and claws. The lustrous glaze and application of fragmented clays are exceptional. The handle has been replaced by an ancient metal "make-do" tinker repair with an applied binding. Bear baiting was banned in Britain in 1835.

Current Condition: Handle is a " make do".

Provenance: Stanley J. Seeger Collection England. Now in gentleman's collection on the Home Counties England.

Literature: Nottingham Salt glazed Stoneware 1690-1800 published by The Nottingham City Museums and Art Galleries.
