A rare antique pottery delftware "Malling" jug with silver collar. The jug is of classic period globular form with a cylindrical neck and decorated in a pleasing mottled purple,the well applied handle is pinched at the lower terminal. The later added silver collar is dated 1641 with the initials W S E. The jug belongs to a range of vessels with distinctive mottled blue or manganese decoration which date from the 1550 period, they are the earliest form of English delftware . A similar jug was used at the West Malling Church in Kent England as an alter piece. Two similar jugs were recorded in the area hence the term "Malling Jug"and the general attribution as possibly English. An example in the British Museum bears a hallmark for 1549-50
