Description
Slip glaze earthenware cider pitcher with fern and leaf decoration and inscriptions in scraffito of a poem, the names Charles Davy May 8th and the name of the affectionate brother James Baker who commissioned the piece for Charles as a gift. The leaf decoration was achieved by pressing fresh leaves into the still damp body, the pitcher would then be coated in a contrasting colour slip resulting in the pattern in resist after the leaves were burnt away during the firing process. This technique was introduced at the Fishleys Pottery by George Fishley ( 1770-1865).
The double scroll on the handle is very striking and an unusual feature on this ware.
