A fine brown saltglaze stoneware tankard impressed "GLO'STER 248 Oxford St" made in London, probably Fulham late 18th century. The tankard is in remarkable condition with a well-applied strap handle. It was common practice for the publicans to mark their wares in an effort to reduce pilferage with the added benefit of advertising. The Duke Of Glouster Tavern located at 249 Oxford Street London opened in 1789 and is recorded later as a Coffee House in 1826.
