Barnstaple tile with Fleur de Lys and dated 1708 with initials NL

This rare tile is an exceptional example in remarkably good condition and one of the best examples of its type. The tile is deeply decorated in relief with olive-brown glaze, and a prominent Fleur de Lys flanked by the initials NL above the date 1708. The initials NL denote the maker Nathanial Leachland located in Barnstaple, North Devon. A paper label attached to the reverse shows that it was acquired from the venerable Grosvenor House Fair London in 1976. Page 162 Slipware in The Longridge Collection records a similar tile.

Dimensions: 5.5 inches high 5.75 inches long

Current Condition: Good condition with some signs of wear in accord with age.
