Astbury-ware earthenware red glazed pitcher 18th century

A rare fine lead-glazed redware baluster shaped earthenware pitcher with a loop-shaped handle pinched at the lower terminal. The sparrow beak shaped pouring lip is hand formed and expertly applied. The relief decoration of twigs, flowers and possibly a squirrel is mould applied in a cream coloured clay which is also applied to the rim of the body and the tip of the handle. The pitcher is probably the work of the Astbury family and is a testament to the skill of the early potters located in Staffordshire.

Current Condition: Fine unrestored condition of good appearance
