Description
Staffordshire pottery pearlware figure of Britannia with fine modelling and decorated with enamels, and with exceptionally striking effect silver lustre.
The back of the base is impressed WOOD AND CALDWELL BURSLEM.
The silver topped hallmarked trident is not original to the figure.
Several patriotic type figures were produced in Staffordshire as the British were flushed with the growth of Empire and its position in the world. Both Britannia and the lion have continued to be a strong symbol of British identity.
