Description
An unusual and rare Staffordshire pearlware pottery figure of a standing lion with paw resting on a ball.
Figures of lions depicted in this manner were very popular in England in the late 18th and early 19th century capturing the burgeoning patriotism associated with victory over the French and the growth of imperial strength.
This figure has a really ferocious aspect which is slightly comical an aspect not intended at the time of making.
