Antique pottery figure of Roger Giles in Pratt type colours English circa 1835

£750

Dated: 1835 Yorkshire England

Humorous figure of Roger Giles squatting to lay eggs with his trousers down and bare backside exposed. Roger was an English farmer who, in an attempt to sell eggs put up a sign advertising fresh eggs which read “new laid eggs, by me”. His unfortunate grammatical mistake was reported in the local press and his notoriety spread with robust humour. The figure is probably a sander desk accessory . Several versions of the figure were produced and this is perhaps the most graphic and one of the rarest of them all.
