Antique period English pottery creamware pitcher with transfer decorations circa 1780

Ref: 1521 Categories: ,

£1200

Dated: 1780 to 1790 Liverpool or Staffordshire England

Antique period English pottery creamware pitcher with transfer printed decorations. One image depicts a rather genteel couple dancing to a tune played by a seated man playing the fiddle. The centre image under the spout is of a tulip and other flowers and leaves. The third transfer print presents a famous sailors poem of the time dedicated to "Susan". Attribution of these creamware pitchers is difficult, as on occasions the piece is made in Staffordshire and decorated in Liverpool, also several other potteries made this type of ware which was much in vogue in the late 18th century. The poem on the jug has a sailors sentiment and this leads to to lean towards a Liverpool Herculaneum attribution with its strong connection to the maritime and it's famous port.

Dimensions: 7 inches high

Current Condition: Minor rim chips restored.

Provenance: Private English Collection.

Literature: The Herculaneum Pottery ( Liverpool's forgotten glory) by Peter Hyland.

£1200    $1380
