Antique pearlware English Staffordshire pottery clock figure of Urania c1800. Urania is a Greek classical figure also known as "The Goddess of Truth" and the muse of Astronomy. The modelling and enamel decoration is of the highest quality and shows the figure of Urania holding a compass against the globe of Earth. The decorative impact is very strong, a very elegant and stylish figure. Clock figures such as this piece were produced to hold a pocket watch.This figure has an unusual feature as there is a slot for the loop at the top of the watch to show through. Such a thoughtful design denotes the care taken with the production of this rare figure.
