Description
Antique English pottery delft blue and white possett pot probably London.
EXHIBITION….IF THESE POTS COULD TALK.
Possett is a medicinal beverage from the middle ages and is made up from a concoction of raw egg, wine and milk which then curdles. I guess the nearest thing to possett we have these days is Egg Nog.
This drink was supposed to have a comforting quality to the sick and infirm. As I hold this delftware pot with its little spout one can only imagine the characters that sipped on the liquid in the hope of obtaining some respite from their illness.Perhaps they did feel better once they had stopped sipping!
These posett pots were prized within the family and were handed down from generation to generation.During the period this pot was made William Hogarth the cartoonist was popular and General James Wolf the English General was driving the French out of Quebec where he was killed by three musket balls. This possett pots spans such along history, for it to have survived to this day it must have had a special place in the homes of its previous owners.
