Description
A revivalist earthenware slipware barrel formĀ Harvest Costrel made by the Dicker Pottery Sussex and inscribed with the date 1911
The costrel is decorated with rich yellow slip bands, the inlaid date of 1810, and the initial HC surrounded by star symbols in the style of earlier Sussex wares.
Benjamin Henry Bridges joined the Dickers pottery at the turn of the century, where he worked and specialized in making copies of earlier inlaid Sussex slipware. His work is well done in the traditional method; examples are in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge and the Hastings Museum.
The costrel is impressed with the mark” The Dicker Sussex U.C&N.”
