This large earthenware charger is slip-decorated with an image of a mermaid combing her long, flowing hair. She is set within a wide trellis-decorated border. The dish is in the Thomas Toft style with good slip trail graphic and vital decoration, probably from 19th-century or earlier England. Mermaids' origins link back to the Sirens of Greek Mythology, and legends tell of their magical powers and love of music and singing.
