Large Fremington earthenware slipware dish with scraffito decoration 19th century Devon England

Category:

£1150

The deep side oval-shaped earthenware slip-decorated baking dish is scraffito comb decorated and made at the Fremington pottery. Interestingly, these dishes were thrown in the round; a central segment was removed, and the two outers were squeezed together to give the oval form. This dish was produced with gravel added to the clay to provide extra kitchen utility strength. The central motif at the bottom of the dish is added to disguise the seam on this rare large version. NOTE; A smaller dish is in our inventory, reference 8345, and when put together with the larger dish makes a compelling decorative display.

Dimensions: 3.5 inches high, 11 inches wide, 12.25 inches long

Current Condition: Good condition in accord with age and use.

Literature: John Edgler, The Fishleys of Fremington ( A Devon Slipware Tradition).
