A rare-sized pearlware Nelson commemorative pitcher decorated with underglaze blue and white transfer prints, pratt-colored ochre, and orange and brown enhancements. This exceptional piece was specially commissioned for Mary Smith Tildsley, named along with the date 1807 around the neck of the pitcher. Nelson's portrait is enclosed in an oval cartouche that includes the inscription: 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY.' The portrait is featured in an oval flanked by naval trophies, while beneath are decorative wreaths of leaves and flowers. On the reverse is a print of HMS Victory firing a broadside. Nelson's honors, victories, and titles are listed below the spout. This rare example is in fine condition and made at Swansea Pottery Wales.
