The rare delftware dish is octagonal formed and naively painted in blue with a double portrait of King William and Queen Mary with the initials W R M . The crowned royal couple are depicted wearing coronation robes in a central panel bordered with thee concentric circles. The dish was made as a commemorative of their Coronation in 1689 in London. The king, widely known as William of Orange, was the sovereign Prince of Orange from birth in the Dutch Republic in the 1670s, and King of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1689 until he died in 1702. As King of Scotland, he is known as William II. He is sometimes known as "King Billy" in Ireland and Scotland. His victory at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 is commemorated by Unionists, who display orange colors in his honour.
