Description
The pottery mug is decorated with an underglaze black print of a Military rider brandishing a saber while trampling over a prone female holding a banner reading “Liberty or Death.”
The rim and base of the piece are decorated with a thin pink lustre line with the legends in black MURDERD ON THE PLAINS OF PETER LOO and MANCHESTER 16 AUGUST.
The Peterloo Massacre took place at St Peter’s Field, Manchester, Lancashire, England, on Monday, 16 August 1819. Eighteen people died and over 700 injured when cavalry charged into a crowd of around 60,000 people who had gathered to demand the reform of parliamentary representation.
