Description
A rare fine example of a Wrotham earthenware two handled mug with slipware decoration. Of baluster form with well applied loop handles, decorated in cream-coloured slip on a brown ground finished with a lustrous glaze, dated 1738 among dots and dashes and initialed WF. During the 17th and 18th century it was a common custom to literally share a drink with your partner which is why so many vessels were made with two handles.
