Description
A massive size rare and historically important English pottery pearlware punch bowl.
The exterior is is well decorated in enamels with a continuous round scene with three coaches on the road to London with villages, houses, gated mansions and countryside.
The interior of the bowl is named I.J.E Pepperday above a coat of arms of the The Taylor’s Guild and the motto “One More Bowl and then”. The sawtooth and chain borders on the rim suspending swags of flowers is interestingly inspired by Chinese porcelain export ware.
The bowl is a snap shot of life at the turn of the 18th century in England.
It is likely that the bowl was especially commissioned as a gift or commemorative for I.J.E.Pepperday and may be an “electioneering” piece or a gift from the Taylor’s Guild for his services.
