A very early Lisbon Portuguese faience ewer with a stunning armorial of a crowned lion. The piece is dated 1631 and is one of the earliest examples known to have polychrome decoration. Portugal had a thriving ceramics market including exports to the Eastern seaboard settlements of America in the 17th century. A similar form ( image 5) is located in the Victoria and Albert Museum London.
