Description
A rare Staffordshire pottery figure of Jim Crow.
Thomas Dartmouth Rice an actor parodied a crippled black slave named Jim Crow.
Rice “blacked -up” for his unkind routine and was perhaps the man who inspired the Minstrels.
Jim Crow performed his act in 1835 in London and caused a sensation.
The figure represents a social insight to the period. (Myrna Schkolne reference Volume 2 Staffordshire Figures).
