Antique English,Staffordshire pottery pearlware bocage figure "Friendship" early 19th century period. One of the most charming and evocative figures from the era, a very good piece with its faux marbleized decorated base. The figures of the boys and their watchful dog and the rendition of the bocage are fine examples of the Staffordshire potters art, very crisply modelled with fine quality enamel decoration. Myrna Sckolne (People,Passions,Pastimes and Pleasures, Staffordshire figures 1810-35.) refers to the possible sources of this figure as Mrs.Hollands "The Affectionate Brothers" first published in 1816 or possibly Thomas Day's "The History of Sanford and Merton where the front piece of the book shows two boys quarreling.The figure may depict their reconciliation .

Current Condition: Minor restoration tips of some leaves.
