Antique Bartmann( Grey beard) Bellarmine tiger saltglaze earthenware bottle Rhineland Germany 17th century. The bottle is decorated with a medallion of a petaled rosette and the face commonly thought to be Cardinal Bellarmine whose bearded face has been immortalized on these bottles. The device was said to be adopted as an antidote to his constant preaching against the temptation of alcholic beverages, an unfortunate PR backlash!
